The Brancatelli File for 1987
April 3: HAWAII: WHERE AMERICA IS DIFFERENT
Travelers who expect the Islands to be an all-American version of the Garden of Eden--or who think they've chosen a "domestic" destination for a leisure trip--are surprised by the differences between Hawaii and the mainland. Hawaii is someplace else and the rules of life are somewhat different.
April 2: HAWAII HOTELS: HOW TO SPEND THE MONEY YOU SAVED ON AIRFARES
Oahu remains "The Gathering Place," but frequent travelers are now flying direct from the mainland to the neighbor islands of Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii. Travelers can use airfare savings on a variety of hotel options, whether guestrooms are booked independently or as part of a tour package.
April 1: HAWAII: THE BONUS PROGRAMS' BEULAH LAND
If you believe the locals, very few of the five million annual visitors are frequent flyers. But the locals are indefensibly wrong. At least one of every three free tickets issued as a reward in the frequent flyer bonus programs is eventually used for travel to Hawaii. So many business travelers now claim free tickets to Hawaii that the airlines have upped the number of miles needed to win trips there.
